Chapter 17

ELENI

The ceiling quakes.

“Get her out of here,” Erebus snarls. “They’re coming. He must have been waiting for the moment the curse broke.”

“How the fuck did Dionysus know that Eleni was even here? What the fuck does he care if the Empire falls?” Eros gathers me into his arms.

“What does he stand to gain if Chaos wins?” Helios asks, and I blink up at him, still drugged by the aftermath of the pleasure Eros and Erebus wrung from my body. His gaze heats as it slides across my body, and I realize with a hazy jolt that I’m completely exposed.

His attention darts away, and I tug the flimsy material back over my breasts, between my legs. When I look back up, Thanatos stares at me, from where he’s entered the room, four packs in his hands.

“We can’t go out the way we planned,” Erebus says. “They’re in the darkest entrance.”

“That leaves two exits.” Thanatos hands Helios a pack, a massive jet-black sword poking up from over his shoulder. “We can either go through the city, and take our chances with Dionysus having minions there, too, or we can go through the caves.”

“There’s no saying that she doesn’t have forces there, either.”

“She wouldn’t need them in that entrance,” Thanatos says quietly. “The thing that lurks there is just as dangerous as whatever else she’s sent for us in the city and in the dark exit.”

“We take our chances with it,” Helios says, and his interjection catches us all by surprise. “Can’t you feel it?”

Eros shakes his head slowly, and I groggily swallow, completely out of it, either from the magic current or from the multiple orgasms or both, I don’t know.

“We’ve lost a bit of ourselves,” Helios says, then jerks his head at me. “It’s in her.”

They stare at me, and recognition flashes through Thanatos’ eyes, his face slack.

“Shit,” I breathe. “I didn’t mean to—”

“Of course, you didn’t,” Helios interrupts, a smile softening his face. “But nevertheless, the four of us aren’t at full power. Though I’m sure we’ll regain our strength soon enough.”

His face is troubled though, and Thanatos seems furious. Though, honestly, that’s nothing new.

“We could split up,” Thanatos growls. “Eros and Erebus could take the girl through the caves, and Helios and I could take the city entrance.”

Pain lances through me, and I clap a hand to my chest. “No,” I croak.

“No?” Thanatos whispers, his eyes dark and murderous. “No? Why not, woman?”

“We can’t split up,” I whisper.

“Tell me exactly what you’re feeling right now, Eleni,” Erebus says seriously, dropping to a crouch beside me. “Why do you say we can’t?”

“This is idiocy,” snarls Thanatos.

I close my eyes, breathing through the pain. The suggestion to break apart, to let Thanatos and Helios go off on their own feels sticky and dark and corrupt.

“It’s wrong,” I tell them, my eyes flying open. “We have to stay together.”

Eros and Erebus exchange a worried look.

The torches flare hotter against the walls, and the stone crypt around us shakes.

“We need to leave now,” Helios says.
